Forum Registration Security Question: Answer

Post by vynum » Tue Dec 11, 2018 5:53 pm

I just wanted to let the Admins/Moderators know it took me a week to find the answer to the security question to register in the forums here at ddaydev.com. It was kind of a pain for me because It has been along time playing quake2 and my memory was foggy to say the least. It would be harder for new comers.

Luckily, with a lot of patients searching the web, I accidentally stumbled on onto this wiki;

https://www.quakewiki.net/archives/retr ... html?p=246

which gave me the answer in the first paragraph.

If this wiki goes down it will be hard for people like me whom would not know the answer. Especially newcomers.

It wouldn't hurt to mention a snippet of history, if you now what I mean?, in your "About" section of the website so visitors can find the answer quickly here at ddaydev.com. This is just a suggestion :)

I have been coming here almost every day and I noticed a lot of visitors, but new members at nuLL.

I wasn't aware there was a security question, You should message Fafner about this as he designed it. He is not here as much as I am but he does show up once a month or so.

We have had a lot of spammers signing up for the site and then posting thousands of spam messages, and I have spent way too much time cleaning them off the site, so maybe Fafner put in a system to help prevent this. I joined over a decade ago when this wasn't in place.

We designed a way to remove them on an industrial scale instead of one at a time, but still a pain.

The answer already is in the about section of the site. I just made the question a little easier though, (added "It starts with a V" to the end of the question). Having a moderately difficult security question is the only effective way to stop spammers. Everything else they get around so it has to stay there.
