file compressed downloads .bz2 or .rar

Post by luosT .tcR » Mon Nov 30, 2015 3:33 pm

yea yea, R1Q2 already has the gzip support, I am talking about the same functionality as HalfLife2 has with .bz2, if you release a new map or package, you can just package it properly in its directory structure and host it for download via http, the current gzip support only supports single files making things difficult, so when an R1Q2 client requests to download:
ovnsofauschwitz.bsp
it will be redirected to the http server listed in the server .cfg file
then a file handler on the http server will automatically send ovnsofauschwitz.bz2 or ovnsofauschwitz.rar the client side r1q2.exe automatically decompress the packaged files and join the game
Now of course R1Q2 would have to be updated, is there anything like this in the works, if not I would like to start it up.
Main reason is NOBODY on this message board or anywhere on the fu**ing internet will help me to get it working on the http server side, I once had a .php file handler for that but I lost it, so nobody is helping me there, if anyone could help me with the current http file handling of .gz files, that would be greate.

I stumbled onto this when I played the StarGate HalfLife2 mod, single file full installs, full mod installation, just connected the server and POW it installed the entire mod and maps as I needed them using .bz2 support.

Eek I just noticed this. What web server are you using? Btw, gzip and bzip2 only handle single files, unless you wrap it in tar.

Im not using any web server, i just used a .php file I paid a web programmer in Ukraine to create for me, it worked, but cant find it now.

Source code for unrar is here, if this could be integrated into r1q2 that would be awsome
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8gyoT ... sp=sharing
or
http://www.rarlab.com/rar/unrarsrc-5.3.8.tar.gz

Using unrar source in the client side R1Q2 would allow fully compressed DDay mod install, as soon as the users R1Q2 client request the mod .dll on the web server, the web server file handler will redirect it to download gamex86.dll.rar in a dday directory on the web server, it will download and extract the entire mod, all other map packs can be stored on there just in case other maps are needed, this is how the .bz2 support for HalfLife2 works, you .tar then .bz2 your packages, lets say you got a map with all new textures & sounds, when a .bsp is trying to be downloaded it will be redirected to the .rar and automatically downloaded and extracted, I am sure .bz2 support would work fine, but a full version of WinRAR can compress files 30% much more compact than .bz2 if you know what you are doing.

True, but WinRAR requires a license, whereas bzip2 does not.

I just spoke with the developers, to use unrar is free, you only need a license to access the full compression features of the client Windows program, so technically yes, to create your packages and utilize the full features of the latest compression you would need a license that cost $15 but you can still use the Windows version or unrar console commands to uncompress files and even create winRAR files, it just denies you access to the full compression methods unless you have a license, I paid $12 16 years ago and they still have it on file, if I lost mine they will just reEmail it to me again, for testing purposes you can create rar files without full compression and once its working, go ahead and pay for a full license, if needed Ill buy it for you once its working.

I prefer not to use proprietary software. 7zip, gzip, bzip2 are all open source.
