thedoghouse upgrade

Post by Rab,d » Thu Mar 19, 2009 7:10 am

Hey i replaced my server with a new computer.
Was: 1200mhz celeron with 256mb pc133 ram on winxp.

Now: 1.8ghz p4 with 512mb pc2700 ram on winxp. Faster hard drive and the motherboard came from a blade setup..so i think the ethernet should be a bit better.

Come try it out! New code there, too.

If want linux for making a server I'd recommend CentOS. Has more options and more server-oriented than Ubuntu.
Also, I'm planning to install it on my other pc tonight and see how it goes.

CentOS is designed off Redhat Enterprise Server. Although if you really want to fine tune it, use Gentoo.

I still have the Gentoo handbook and it learned A LOT. But.. it was just a big pain in the ass compiling everything you needed..
Portage is okay, but Synaptic is just that much easier... Same for URPMI and Mandriva, leans to Synaptic.

Most releases have things similar to synaptics. Synaptic is based on "apt-get" and also there is "yum" that does the same. For regular software is the easy answer :P

I have upgraded my ethernet card. I noticed players were getting lag and overflows...I didn't have this with my previous server. So, I installed a new ethernet card and disabled the onboard one. Let me know is you see a diference.

Hey Rab,d

I don't know if this applies to your server or it's the new version 5 coding.
It wasn't happening last year(When I found out you were running the Poland maps) It just recently started, make a long story short I have one IP address, a router and three people that play DDay. Here's what happened, I popped back on boards saw the Italian pack beta was out. Installed it on to the computers. Log in, but when Capt.Bucket logs in. I get the turtle. He can continue to play but I get basically booted. I'm turtled until I exit the game.

I don't think it's the Italian pack because we were able to log in to [DEV]Dirks(4threich) server and playing the first Italian map (after that it was stuck~wouldn't change to the next map but with that not the topic of this post that for a different one)

Ok. I upgraded my server again.
It now has a super quiet Dell gx280.
-2.8ghz single core with hyperthreading
-2gb pc4200 ram
-SATA hardrive

I should be able to leave this up all the time now. My server sits in my bedroom closet...so my wife was making me shutdown the old one at night cuz it was noisey.

I am going to set the max fps on my server to 100. I think this will prevent overflows.
Let me know wutcha think.
