D-Day rsync (syncs maps, textures, models, players) v0.7

Post by Dirk » Fri Jul 22, 2005 5:07 pm

It seems that the dday community is missing a lot of maps. (Evidence is shown when only the dday and invade series are played.)

To fix that problem, there is now a rsync* server set up which downloads only files that you are missing at a high transfer speed compaired to ftp .

It has all the maps (.bsp)s and the textures that came in the dday download + map archives as listed here .. http://texnofobix.net/~q2user/allstats.php

*Nix ppl use

Code: Select all

see what is availible using
rsync rsync://texnofobix.net/

Then use

rsync --recursive --compress --verbose --checksum --stats rsync://texnofobix.net/ddayXXXXX ./dday/XXXXX

where XXXXX is pics, maps, textures and etc

Below is disabled right now

The new windows download is done.

Windows ppl download this and read the readme!
http://texnofobix.net/~nemo3383/downloa ... -win32.zip
Extract the rsync folder in its entirity into C:\Quake2\

Mappers!!! If you want your maps distributed, which I would highly recommend, contact me.

*rsync is a specialized server that is made to quickly copy multiple files from one place to another with compression, and only the parts that have changed.

We have tried this before. Me and Afrow set it all up. The Windows version had a GUI frontend, and the *nix version (the orginal) was written in Perl so it was pretty universal.

There was always a steady growth in it's use, but I was never really sure if people thought it was a good idea. D-Day has a very small community...

The biggest problem we had was finding mirrors for the files.

#!/usr/local/bin/perl = $thedogsbollocks;

Sorry we had lighting and tornado conditions here so I took it down and I just brought it back up just now, after I got home from work.

Oh yeah it would speed up your transfer I think to enable compression by adding -z to the file.

Stormwolf, the main idea of this was to eliminate the 'you don't have the correct map' bug that seems to happen sometimes. It does not provide textures and etc yet, just the .bsp

The ddma is/was a great idea but it looks broken :(

actually it should exist in ./quake2/rsync ... the /dday folder would work though ... I think.

ok, better be safe than have a lightning and a fired computer....

testing that again with the -z ... goes mutch faster. u should have added the '-z' from the start i think.

I assumed it was on by default :(

When you get to Done it is done syncing.

no
not needed, it would just make syncing take a lot of bandwidth away from people who need just the maps

I think D-Day needs a package system like in Linux, with a uniform installer.

i think you should add texture downloading, cuz playing a map without them is annoying. Sounds are not that basic, as they're mainly enviromental.
Could you include dll's and extra frames? that'd be great.

I just check: After 8 months of me not updating it, this month the index DDMA page still recieved around 500 no-unique hits. That's amazing... I don't really have the willpower to start it up again, on account of me not playing, well, anything any more.
