Textures

Post by Shrewd » Mon May 11, 2015 6:46 pm

Hi there, I've a little doubt right now for a little personal project ;) not a dday one sry.

PNG textures are not supported by quark? I do not seem to be able to open them, as it asks for pcx, or wal file for Q2. I think some Q2 engines are capable of running with PNG.
So if png are "high-res" pcx and wall, have some limits respecting palete or size?

r1q2 can show png textures. To build the map in quark army knife or a similar generation map maker you need the wals to position them. The issue is always making a wal from a png or better a tga.

The wals can not be bigger than 256x512 or 512x256. Nor should the hi res they are connected to. 256x256 or 128x128 seem to work best. Map with the wal, then put the hi rez in the same directory with the wal and the engine will call it.

However I have found that getting the wal from the hi rez at times does not work, and sometimes there is something in the wal that prevents it from being loaded. So it isn't a slam dunk situation.

Okey... so since most q2 links I found are dead... How to make the wal? I need to create textures by my own, based on real life pictures :P so I guess I'll have to play with photoshop a bit, but I remember Q2 had a reduced palette and was tricky with images. I think I'll try using just wal files for the moment, so I can see them on Quark.

I've always prefered QEradiant and it's descendants to quark, but that's just me. Gtkradiant supports png textures. http://icculus.org/gtkradiant/

Does it have all the dday items in it already or do those have to be created?

It would be pretty silly, if it did. Adding entities is trivial, though.
