Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
Nightrider recently talked with a developer of a Quake2 engine called KMquake2. It has the ability to load hi rez jpgs, seems much more stable than egl, and smoother. And the developer was kind enough to port dday into his engine so it works well.
Now the issue is finding hi rez textures as jpgs that will be similar to the wal textures currently used. I have tried this on just a couple textures and it is pretty nice looking. But the player still looks cartoonish.
I could go through the labor of finding textures to match what is on maps, the ones I like of course, but the question is would there be any interest? A lot of people like the current textures. But then it might bring people if there were hi rez textures. But I can see a lot of hours being involved.
So what is the interest, if any? And kindly ask players who don't come to the forum to kindly say what they think.
Thanks
Munf

Sounds quite intriguing. Ideally, we'd have both versions up and running. I'd definitely like to give it a shot/looksee

Ok, that is one person. Anyone else? It will be a lot of work so checking.

I'd say if you do it, its for yourself. If thats how you want to spend your time then its all good

I have been checking it out. The graphics are pretty cool, smoke trails, explosions, carcasses flying everywhere. Even without new textures I like it. Anyone want to try it out at home?
Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
I'd love to try it out! Though do bots work with this version or would we need multiple people to really check it out?

From what nightrider told me I think there would be problems unless a server was running it. Hopefully he comes by and talks about this.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
Here is in this forum is a link for KMQ2 ported over for DDay its graphic's are really good. If you have anything from EGL like MD3 TGA and JPG files it will get them first and work them in. I have seen this and it works. http://leray.proboards.com/thread/3647/ ... y-normandy
Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
Hm... I think I found the link through that forum threat to download the modified DDay mod, but I'm not sure how to get it up and running to test out. Any pointers? Do I have to download KMQ2 first and then apply DDay to it or is what was in that .zip file from the forum link something I can just drop somewhere within my current DDay directory?

yes first just download the game engine from here http://www.markshan.com/knightmare/downloads.htm for KMQ2 in that zip here http://www.markshan.com/knightmare/down ... pdate6.zip just find the kmquake2.exe game engine which is the only thing you need from the zip file and just add the ported dday file kmq2gamex86.dll that was in the link here Here's the ported DLL and modified source: http://www.markshan.com/knightmare/down ... ay5063.zip

Just add both files too the main root Dir. EX C:\Quake2\kmq2gamex86.dll
C:\Quake2\kmquake2.exe
C:\Quake2\kmquake2.exe
Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
You need the pk3 files put in the dday folder also...apart from the levelshots one maybe
edit...the dll goes in the dday folder too

I didn't know I had any pk3 files.
Anyway, has anyone else tried it? I like the smoke and bullet holes, and explosions, though tnt and bombs don't seem to show. But it does leave nice power burns from the explosions.

Well I have about 2300 images that can be hi res. Not sure how to add the alpha channel for transparent but will try. And I have noticed in the engine that transparent images have some kind of motion in them like blobs.
Blood and guts are pretty cool though.

When the bullets hit a wall, I got a small black square frame shapes with larger grey ones for smoke. Once I added the pk3 files, they looked right.
For the once in a blue moon that I actually play, I will stick with q2max. I added muzzle flashes to some guns that don't work with egl or kqm and q2max has the sniper scopes as well.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
I myself did not add the pk3 files because I have them from Rab'd EGL files and it gets the weapons and players models from them. I have seen small black square frame shapes on players I have flame on and that are on fire. So I may add the whole zip to see if I lose them on my end. This Engine does give DDay a whole new look and feel.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
The main problem I get is the game seizes up and start looping a sound and doesn't stop. As the sound card works on everything else on my computer I am assuming it is something to do with how the game interacts with my machine.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
so I knocked the audio down from 48000 to 24000 and it has not locked up through 26 maps, so I guess that was the issue for me. Also the decals that run the explosions and sparks and stuff can be adjusted to good effect.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
Hmmm, interesting. I have been renaming many hi res textures to see how this new engine shows them. I accidentally loaded the standard r1q2 and it also loads the hi res I discovered. Probably everyone but me knew that. But the maps to look much cooler.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
I think some of the textures look to washed out though. Maybe too much gamma? Not sure. Anyone got a suggestion.
Once I get them figured out if anyone wants the ones I do for the maps I have I can send them, though they would also show up in the maps that also reference the same textures.

Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
Well I tried making wals of all the hi res textures so I could apply them in a seperate folder and not have to worry about messing other maps, but I keep getting a mixed texture and parsing error, so I don't know what to do. And the Alphas can't get to work. Well enough effort. There isn't a stampede for change anyway.
Re: Do you have interest in a higher graphics engine?
This sounds amazing! im new in this forum but have been playing the game since 2008 i think. A graphical update would do this game good!
